The Colt 45's changed their name to the Astros to start the 1965 season and to open the Astordome. It was 1965 and not 1964.
For all you people that think the assination of JFK was the reason the Colt 45's changed their name to the Astros need to think again. I am an avid Colt 45's and Astros fan. The following is from Astrosdaily.com. (Judge Roy Hofheinz was fighting a lawsuit with the Colt Firearms Company over the ballclub's use of the "Colt .45" name. With the team preparing to move into a futuristic new stadium, the judge wanted a new name for his squad - something original for which he could be the plaintiff the next time there was a suit. He consulted with some of the astronauts at NASA about honoring them with his new "nickname". They liked it. The Houston entry in the National League was about to be reborn.)
I have to admit I still like the logo alot. I think it would have served better than the Astros. Although the space program was big at the time, and it was located at the Johnson Space Center. And he was our new President.
So in 1964 it was changed before the season started. I guess you had to live back then to understand the mood of the country.
The reason it was changed is because of the JFK assasination. The sate of Texas and the city of Houston thought it to be in bad taste considering what happened to the President
