The New Orleans Zephyrs relocated from Denver, Colorado to Louisiana for the 1993 season, at the time as a member of the Triple-A level American Association. The name was inherited from Denver who took the name Zephyrs in 1985, inspired by the Denver Zephyr passenger train which ran for 40 years between Chicago and the Mile High City. Upon relocation to New Orleans the owner decided to retain the name.
In 1998 the Zephyrs shifted to the Pacific Coast League following the disbandment of the American Association, the team underwent a re-brand in 2005 - their first since moving from Denver and then another in 2010 with a more local design. Following the 2016 season the Zephyrs dropped the name in favour of one more suited to New Orleans, they announced their new name New Orleans Baby Cakes in November to be used in time for the 2017 season.
