The Sacramento Gold Miners were the first non-Canadian team and the first United States-based team to join the CFL when they were awarded an expansion franchise for the 1993 season. The Gold Miners, as well as the other US-based teams that would soon follow, were not subject to the same rules as the Canadian-based clubs in regards to the minimum amount of Canadian-players required to be on their roster. The Gold Miners played at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State. The club lasted just two seasons before relocating to Texas where they would be known as the San Antonio Texans for the 1995 season before the CFL ended the US experiement entirely.
