The Los Angeles Kings joined the NHL in 1967 as part of the league’s six-team expansion. Owner Jack Kent Cooke chose the name Kings to reflect royalty with their original colours of gold and purple (which they referred to as "Forum Blue"), chosen to continue that theme with their first uniforms featuring only a crown on the front. The team quickly moved into The Fabulous Forum, sharing a building and a colour scheme with the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers.
In 1988, the Kings unveiled a major rebrand to black and silver which coincided with the acquisition of Wayne Gretzky. This look became synonymous with their 1993 run to the Stanley Cup Final led by Gretzky as well as the numerous records set while wearing these colours. The Kings brought purple back in 1998 before returning again to black and silver just in time to win two Stanley Cups in 2012 and 2014. For the 2024-25 NHL season, the Kings threw back to the Gretzky-era logo and uniforms.
