Front-facing growling panther head in royal & gold. In 2017, the University commissioned Nike Global Identity Group (Nike GIG) to update and refresh team logos, colors and athletic apparel for 14 sports programs. The challenge: to modernize the Pittsburgh Panthers brand while keeping many of the University`s graphic traditions. These included the Pitt logo, rendered in distinctive script, as well as the teams’ blue and gold colors, now Royal Blue and University Gold. New secondary marks & wordmarks were added to the athletics brand as well, all unveiled in April 2019.

The Panther Head logo is a culmination of the beloved panther statues across the campus. That sculptural aesthetic and aggressiveness has been captured in this new mark. Howver, there are design cues that visually connect to the arched motif from the Cathedral of Learning. The forward-facing angle is a nod to the panther fountain at the front entrance of that building.
