Prior to the 1994–95 school year, the universitys nickname was the St. Johns Redmen, which referenced the red uniforms worn by its teams in competition. The name was interpreted as a Native American reference in the 1960s, and the university did have a mascot, which eventually led to the teams name change to the Red Storm. With the nickname change came a new athletics brand featuring red, blue, & yellow combined with a horse & lightning bolt motifs. This new secondary logo features the Red Storm & bolt wordmark on a roundel with arched school name above New York.
