following 15 months of work involving an internal committee and local and national branding experts, Washington announced a new, consolidated identity program in April 2001. Washington selected Nike Team Sports, a division of Nike, to oversee the identity project. The identity launch included an enhanced block W logo, a new secondary animated Husky logo, new word marks and new color schemes. The cornerstone of Washington\'s new identity program is the most established logo from its past, the traditional block W. While the mark was slightly altered to scale back its horizontal proportions, the changes are virtually undetectable. The alternate to the Block W is without the outline which can appear in purple or in gold on the appropriate colored background.
