The Saskatoon Blades franchise began in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League in 1964/65 as a feeder team to the pro-level Western Hockey League's Los Angeles Blades, hence the use of the Blades name by the team. The Blades transferred to the junior-level Western Hockey League upon it's formation for the 1966/67 season.

For most the life of the franchise the Blades have used a logo that combines the imagery of both a hockey skate blade and the blade of a farmers sickle. This idea was the centrepiece of various primary logos up until 2000 when it was replaced by a thresher machine with a face and grimace. In 2005 the Blades brought back a skate blade as their primary albeit in a much more re-designed fashion. Their original logo has been returned as a shoulder patch, recoloured to match the modern colour scheme.

Several former Blades moved on to the National Hockey League including future Hockey Hall of Famer Bernie Federko. The Saskatoon Blades lost the 1989 CHL Memorial Cup Final but had only qualified for the tournament due to them being the host team. The Blades will also host and participate in the Memorial Cup round-robin tournament again in May 2013.
